Chuwi FreeBook N150: Thermals, Casual Gaming, and What the Intel N150 Actually Delivers
The FreeBook N150 runs better than its specs suggest — and the thermals are why
Budget 2-in-1 laptops tend to disappoint in one of two ways: either the display is mediocre or the machine throttles itself into uselessness under any real load. The Chuwi FreeBook N150 mostly avoids both problems. The 2.5K panel is genuinely good, and with a bit of attention the Intel N150 inside stays cool enough to sustain its modest but real performance.
What the Intel N150 actually is
Intel’s N150 is the Twin Lake refresh of the N100 — four cores, four threads, up to 3.6 GHz, built on a 7nm process. Intel claims roughly 45% improvement over older budget Celeron equivalents, though gains over the N100 specifically are more incremental: a higher clock ceiling, slightly more capable integrated graphics, the same power envelope.
The 6W TDP is the defining characteristic. It keeps the machine quiet under light workloads. It also means sustained heavy load — long video encodes, large compilations, or anything that hammers the GPU — will hit the chip’s thermal budget before it hits its clock limit. TJ Max is 105°C, but the power governor steps down well before that under real conditions.
Idle temps sit in the low-to-mid 30s. Under typical sustained load they rise into the mid-50s. Push hard and sustained enough and you will see higher numbers, but most everyday use stays comfortably away from that ceiling.
Where the temperature improvement actually comes from
The FreeBook N150 cools via a copper heat pipe feeding aluminum fins with a small blower fan. Adequate for a 6W chip. The problem is not the cooler design — it is the factory thermal paste application, which on budget Chuwi laptops tends to be thin and unevenly spread.
This is the unglamorous explanation behind most community posts about dramatic temperature improvements on these machines. Repasting is not exciting, but it works. Fresh compound, properly cleaned surfaces, and a solid heat pipe reinstall can make a real difference in peak temps. No exotic cooling mods required — just correcting what came from the factory.
Chuwi’s own community forum has threads dedicated to cooling modifications for these laptops. For most users the baseline repaste handles the majority of the improvement before anything more invasive becomes necessary.
Can it run Doom?
Yes. Classic Doom from 1993 runs on essentially anything with a screen, so that is not much of a bar. The more interesting question is how the N150’s integrated graphics handle more recent titles — and the answer is better than expected at this price.
The GPU side of the N150 packs 24 Intel UHD execution units clocking up to 1 GHz. That is a genuine step up from older budget chip iGPUs. Doom (2016) is playable at 720p on low settings. Doom Eternal is a more demanding engine — it runs, but requires settings compromises to reach smooth framerates. Neither plays well at the panel’s native 2520×1680, but they do run.
Running Doom as a budget laptop benchmark has become a community ritual at this point. What it really measures is that the iGPU handles 2D titles, older 3D games, retro emulation, and some recent releases on reduced settings. For anything in that range, the FreeBook N150 is a reasonable option at its price.
The display deserves its own section
13.4 inches, 2520×1680, IPS, with touch. The 3:2 aspect ratio is the practical differentiator — more vertical real estate than a 16:9 panel, which matters for documents, web browsing, and code. Display quality sits well above what you would normally see at this price point.
Stylus support works. The 360° hinge flips the machine into tablet or tent mode. These are not just spec-sheet additions; they genuinely change how the device gets used day to day.
Build, battery, and who this is actually for
The 6061 aluminum alloy chassis weighs 1360g and tops out at 18.4mm thick. Solid for the price. The 38Wh battery is on the small side — USB-C charging is convenient, but expect to need an outlet within reach during longer work sessions.
Students, writers, and remote workers who carry their laptop everywhere and do mostly document and browser work will find a lot to like here. The N150 handles all of that efficiently and quietly.
It is not the right tool for sustained creative workloads, gaming at native resolution, or heavy multitasking with resource-hungry apps. The N150 is transparent about what it is — and at this price, with that display and that build quality, it does not need to be anything else.
